Optional Tour Information
May your stay in Kyoto
be a truly memorable one.
Our hotel concierge has carefully selected special experiences
where you can feel the historic townscapes and the colors of the four seasons.
We introduce a variety of plans that richly broaden the scope of your trip,
from traditional culture breathing within the silence to quality moments
where you can feel the
craftsmanship up close.
Please enjoy a time to
touch upon the unique
charms of Kyoto.
Let us introduce some of Japanese culture.
The difference
between a shrine and a temple
The moment a visitor passes beneath a shrine’s torii gate, they quietly take a step toward a reverence for nature itself.
Shinto culture holds that deities (kami) reside in everything from mountains to trees and rocks, without relying on a specific scripture.
Temples, conversely, have endured as places to 'calm one's mind' through prayer and practice based on Buddhist teachings.
Though they may seem similar, the atmosphere that arises within each is entirely different, and together they form the rich two wings of Japanese spiritual culture.
About the Way of Tea
— The Philosophy of Stillness Within Motion
Sado is far more than the mere etiquette of preparing tea.
It is a 'way' to honor the seasons and show deep consideration for others, with every movement of the hands performed with mindfulness.
Even the faint sounds —the gentle simmer of the water and the whisking of the tea— serve as guides to clear one's mind.
Through the spirit of Ichiza Konryu —the idea that all present unite to create a singular harmony— the true essence of Japanese hospitality, or omotenashi, quietly reveals itself.
About Japanese Paper
— Paper that Breathes with the Air
Washi is more than just paper. Crafted by slowly layering plant fibers, such as kozo and mitsumata, in pure water, it possesses a lightness that feels as if it has 'captured the air' itself. To touch it is to feel a moist, gentle warmth—the very breath of nature captured in a single sheet.
When held up to the light, the fibers shift their delicate expressions, reflecting the soft shadows and subtle aesthetics of Japanese beauty.
Japanese Traditional Crafts
- A Culture of Handwork Reflecting Region and Season
Japanese traditional crafts were born from the wisdom of daily life, developed in harmony with nature.
Whether it is lacquerware, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, or metalwork, each piece is finished with immense time and care, honoring the unique character of materials like wood, clay, and metal. A defining feature of Japanese craftsmanship is the aesthetic that values subtle fluctuations and the beauty of aging over perfect uniformity. These objects are not merely tools; they are companions that grow and evolve alongside the person using them.
Contemporary Experiences
- Japanese Aesthetics within the Digital Realm
Modern Japanese experiences are defined by the seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology and traditional sensibilities.
In digital art and interactive spaces, light, sound, and movement respond to the presence of the viewer, causing the boundary between the artwork and the audience to dissolve.
What lies there is not mere spectacle, but a unique aesthetic that has long valued nature, seasons, and harmony.
While the forms may change with the times, the spirit of 'mindful feeling' continues to be quietly passed down.
Long-Established Shops
— Forms of Heritage Carried Through the Ages
Japanese long-established businesses, or shinise, do not merely preserve history; they represent a culture of continuous adaptation.
Techniques, flavors, and philosophies passed down through generations have evolved alongside daily life, remaining relevant to each era. Behind the serene presence of their traditional storefronts and architecture lies a steadfast commitment to prioritizing trust above all else.
The spirit of finding inherent value in the act of enduring quietly tells the story of an aesthetic unique to Japan.
Japanese culture possesses a unique aesthetic sensibility where religion, crafts, and performing arts are deeply intertwined with 'stillness,' 'the seasons,' and 'nature.'
Rather than prioritizing ostentation, we value the 'unseen' — subtle presences and negative space — and find richness within them.
Prayer, harmony, and quiet 'pauses' gently breathe within everyday gestures and life itself, shaping the distinctly Japanese landscape.
We hope you can experience this Japanese spirit even within our optional tours.
